Traditionally, when you sit down with a Financial Planner, they begin by showing you products. This can be life insurance with an investment component, it can be mutual funds or some other packaged product. They sell you the product, they get a commission and you are then locked into whatever the conditions exist for that particular investment product. Or, you decide you do not want a product, you want a portfolio and they then decide what stocks, bonds and funds to invest in.
From a compensation point of view, there are two traditional ways such financial professionals are paid. They can be paid a commission on each product or share sale, or they can charge a flat fee for the year and you then have unlimited access to them in terms of asking questions. Both ways of doing business have inherent problems – product sales usually come with high fees, and individuals stock/bond transactions can have not only high fees but commissions that are paid even if the financial professional loses you money.
At Black Swan Global Investments, we like to keep it simple. We do not charge any fees, we do not charge commissions – we simple charge a percentage of gain each quarter! This means that the money we make for you stays in your account making you more money, until the end of the quarter when we present the consulting bill for a percentage of what your account has gained. Bottom line? If we do not make money for you, we do not make any money!
